4 Tips to Help You Avoid Skin Cancer

4 Tips to Help You Avoid Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is one of the most common and widely-spread forms of cancer, yet it can also be one of the easiest to prevent. With so many people suffering from skin cancers each year, it's important that you take steps to reduce our risk. Fortunately, you can adopt several simple practices to ward off skin cancers, from knowing your risk factors to wearing sunscreen daily and avoiding excessive sun exposure.

If you have concerns about suspicious moles or want to schedule a preventive skin cancer screening, contact the trusted team at Jordan Valley Dermatology Center in South Jordan, Utah. Led by experienced dermatologist Douglass Forsha, MD, our office provides expert screenings and treatment options to keep your skin healthy. In the meantime, these four tips can help you avoid skin cancer.

1. Always wear sunscreen

Going outside on a cloudy day might seem like the perfect time to skip the sunscreen, but that's not the case. Clouds may hide the sun's rays but don't block them entirely. Up to 90% of the sun's harmful UV rays can still penetrate through the clouds, leaving your skin at risk for damage.

Whether going for a walk around the block or spending the day at the beach, wearing sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 on all exposed skin is important. By taking this simple step, you can protect your skin from sunburn, premature aging, and even skin cancer.

2. Stay in the shade

Protecting your skin from the damaging effects of the sun is essential for maintaining healthy skin. It's important to know the times of day when UV rays are at their strongest to avoid potential damage.

Typically, UV rays are strongest between 10am and 4pm. We recommend staying in the shade during this time to protect your skin from harmful rays. Use broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect exposed skin when you go out into the sun. And wearing protective clothing, like hats and long-sleeve shirts, can also reduce your risk of sun damage.

3. Choose the right clothing

When protecting your skin from the sun's harmful rays, your clothes can make a big difference. Choosing clothing that covers your skin is a simple and effective way to shield yourself from UV radiation.

Opting for long, light-colored fabrics or ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) swimwear can provide extra protection and keep you cool in the heat. Remember, even when the sun isn’t visible, its rays can still harm your skin, so be mindful when spending time outdoors.

4. Avoid indoor tanning beds

Indoor tanning beds have been a popular choice for those who want a quick, sun-kissed glow all year round. However, the risks associated with their use far outweigh their benefits. A bronzing lotion is a much safer alternative if you want to get that perfect tan without putting your health on the line.

Not only do these lotions provide a natural-looking tan, but they also nourish your skin with essential vitamins and nutrients that leave it feeling soft and supple. By avoiding indoor tanning beds and opting for a bronzing lotion, you will protect your skin from harmful UV rays and do your skin a favor by keeping it healthy and hydrated.
